Booking
What documents do you need to rent a car in Lebanon?
· 4 min read
There are two separate checks between you and a set of keys: the one AutoRent does once, and the one the rental company does on the day. Knowing which is which is what stops a booking falling apart at pickup.
The one-time AutoRent verification
Before your first booking, AutoRent asks you to verify your identity by uploading either a driving licence or a national ID. You choose which. The upload is reviewed by the AutoRent team rather than approved automatically.
Three things worth knowing:
- It is once, not per booking. Once approved, the same verification covers future car, boat and activity bookings. You do not re-upload each time.
- It gates every listing type. Cars, boats and activities all require an approved ID. There is no category you can book around it.
- Review takes time. Do it when you create your account, not on the morning you need the car. A booking cannot complete while verification is still pending.
What the rental company asks for at pickup
This is separate, and it varies by company. Typically you should expect to present the physical document you verified with, and to settle any security deposit in person. Individual listings can carry their own requirements and a free-text note from the owner — these appear on the listing page, and they are the authoritative source for that particular car.
Read that section before booking rather than after. It is where a company states things like additional documents, age conditions, or restrictions specific to that vehicle.
If you are visiting from abroad
Whether your national driving licence is sufficient on its own, or whether you also need an International Driving Permit, depends on your nationality and on the rental company's own policy. Both can change.
Do not take this from a guide — including this one. Check your embassy's current guidance for Lebanon, and confirm directly with the rental company before you travel. An IDP is inexpensive and quick to obtain in most countries, so if there is any doubt, getting one before you fly is the cheap insurance.
Common reasons a pickup goes wrong
- Verification still pending. Started too late. Upload early.
- Name mismatch. The name on the booking should match the document. Book under your legal name, not a shortened version.
- Expired document. Check the expiry date on whatever you upload.
- Deposit not anticipated. The listing states whether one applies and it is settled in person. Arrive knowing the amount.
Getting started
Verification lives in your account and takes a couple of minutes. Do it once, then browse cars or boats knowing the booking will go through cleanly.
